The
bells were rung earlier this year for the
first time since the 1880’s. They
had not been heard since Jack the Ripper’s
reign of terror!
Over the past 6 months, a
team of volunteers have carried out tests
on
the stability of the tower, and brought the
bells into temporary
use to stir interest in their restoration.

Close up of derelict installation
A complete restoration of
the bells is urgently needed or they will fall
silent forever. The reasons for restoration
are as follows:
• The old bellframe
is rotten and unstable
• The bells are at risk of becoming cracked and broken
• The fittings are derelict and no longer serviceable
• The bearings on which the bells hang worn out
• Training and maintaining a band is impossible with the bells in this
condition
