The bells were rung earlier this year for the first time since the 1880’s. They had not been heard since Jack the Ripper’s reign of terror!

Over the past 6 months, a team of volunteers have carried out tests
on the stability of the tower, and brought the bells into temporary
use to stir interest in their restoration.

A complete restoration of the bells is urgently needed or they will fall silent forever. The reasons for restoration are as follows:

• The old bellframe is rotten and unstable
• The bells are at risk of becoming cracked and broken
• The fittings are derelict and no longer serviceable
• The bearings on which the bells hang worn out
• Training and maintaining a band is impossible with the bells in this condition
